Has this ever happened to you? The party was too good to leave after only a drink or two. Old mates and new were enjoying themselves. The festive atmosphere had relaxed inhibitions. Smooth drinks of the barkeeper hired by the host tasted like ambrosia. With each further cocktail the single women got better looking too.
They say all good things must come to a close. So, with a pleasant hum on it ultimately was time to head for the door. Arriving alone at this party wouldn't mean leaving alone though. You had hooked up with exciting new buddy and she was coming along for over a trip home.
Blood alcohol levels deemed to mar driving have come down steadily. A famous congressman just about lost the election when it was exposed he once was caught for DUI. However, in those days of his youth, angles and laws were different. No jail time or license suspension. Merely a small fine and maybe some laughs with the cops and it was back on the road.
No more. When this dude was nearly at his destination his exciting friend had gotten sick. Stopping the car attracted the attention of the police officer driving by. Shortly out came the device that shows blood alcohol in the body by reading exhaled breath. The officer was very pro in the way he put the handcuffs on. Not too tight but snug enough to remind you that without Houdini to help they were staying on.
As you watched your new automobile being loaded on the tow truck, the very last thing on your intellect now was what should have been with the new friend. A presentation you were to make at work in the morning was now in serious jeopardy. Suddenly you realized that being locked away in jail was not just something you saw on television. Even thru the fog of intoxication your anxiety was building.
When the patrol automobile pulled into the double gated area where prisoners were scheduled you realized that the man shortly to be in gaol was you. How could that be possible? You had never even received a parking ticket. Now you were facing serious charges, exorbitant fine, insurance rates raised to the sky and, naturally, the lawyer's fee and court costs. As a guy good with numbers you began to figure the price of each drink you had consumed at that wonderful party.
Instead of the jail cells you had seen so many times in those Western pictures you loved, you ended up in a massive holding cell with nearly a hundred other men. Most of them were far less educated than you and held roles requiring lots of muscle and sweat. They did not dress the way you did. Your shoes, slacks and name brand shirt surely cost more than the wardrobe of a few of these guys.
Time went by slowly and little hope was on the horizon until the attorney from Musca Law in Naples, Florida, arrived.
